In a more retro tech segment, we are going to talk about companies directly addressing customer wants and needs. How is that for a twist?
According to the Verge, Nokia's new G22 phone can have its battery replaced in about 5 minutes. In this day and age of cellphones that are so hard to unglue and put back together, this is refreshingly different. Even the "easier to replace" battery of the Galaxy S23 Ultra still requires you to heat up the back and pry it apart.
They have also timed out screen repairs down to 20 minutes, which again is unheard of when you are trying to repair modern phones. Apple says that their screen repairs, for example, can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours at the Apple Store, and requires some pretty specialized equipment. Nokia is also partnering with iFixit by providing parts and instructions for their new G22 phone to make it cheaper and easier for their customers to have a serviceable phone. Hopefully this will kick off a broader trend of repair-ability and recycling of tech versus just filling landfills with e-waste.
Released in the US on February 25th, the Nokia G22 looks to be about $150 US (not a sponsor, but call us Nokia!) As a side note, while Great Britain passed their Right to Repair Act in 2021, twenty US states are still fighting the good fight to repair your own stuff, with California being at the forefront of this battle. We'll keep you informed right here with any new developments.
