We have covered some bizarre topics in our blogs in the past including but not limited to whether or not artificial intelligence (AI) generated submissions should be allowed to be entered into contests as well as whether or not robots count as workers. What we have not explicitly looked at was the potential impact that new technology has as it becomes more accessible. From viral stories of AI art getting entered into contests and winning to people using AI chat services like ChatGPT to write code, papers, and emails, AI and the use of AI is getting more normalized. Before we get too far into the impact of AI, let's cover how some of these tools work.

How does AI chat work? AI chat uses natural language processing and machine learning algorithms to understand and interpret user inputs. These two things combined is how AI chats are able to "learn" and then mimic human conversation. AI chats have the ability to understand questions and commands and provide responses based on the data/information fed to them. Like everything else, the more data the AI is provided, the "better" the responses will be. This is all assuming that the information that the AI is fed is not "garbage". For example, an AI chat system generated for a website to help with customer service will base its responses off of input received from users. If given the instruction to tailor responses to individual users, all it will take is one troll user to throw the algorithm off and respond in a more crude manner. A more generalized model should receive more "good data" and should be able to provide conversational experiences that feel more natural and helpful to users, again assuming that the negative interactions are drowned out by positive ones.

How does AI create art work? AI art, similarly to AI chat, uses machine learning algorithms to create media in various forms such as images, videos, and music. One of the more common methods used is neural networking. Neural networking is a type of machine learning that is designed to learn from data inputs and can identify and adjust "influence" of specific nodes. Once trained, the neural network can generate new art by predicting patterns and relationships based on the data it was trained on. So again, if "garbage" is used as an input, "garbage" will be the result. Or, what we are seeing with popular AI art sites, is that the art generated imitates specific artists or an art style and is unable to drift too far outside of the styles that it was trained on. In other words, the more data and the more diverse the data the AI is given to work with, the more outputs there will be. Deepfake generation works in a similar way and has been covered in more detail in some of our previous posts as well.

How has AI started to impact different industries? In art, AI art has started to take over. There have been a few instances where AI art was entered into contests and won. There have also been an abundance of articles covering the ethics of doing such a thing, some arguing that AI art is inauthentic and requires no talent and others claiming that people who generate art with the use of AI can still be considered artists since their prose is what was used to generate the art. In addition, it has been reported that AI chat services such as chatGPT have been used for everything from emails to scripts to papers to articles and it is difficult to tell when something has been written using an AI chat. Most of the impact so far has been that it is difficult for companies to determine whether something is an original or has been generated by AI. The same thing could be said about deepfake videos with services that have popped up offering to create deepfake videos at affordable prices. While this has resulted in some parody videos featuring the likeness of celebrities it has also led to the rise of deepfake porn.

What's real and what's not? That's what the rise of the use of AI has resulted in. We'll have to wait until some sort of legislation or corporate rules are passed to truly understand the societal impact of AI generated media.
