What is bigfoot? Bigfoot, also referred to as sasquatch is a mythical creature with a human-like appearance - but covered in hair. It has been reportedly sighted across forests in North America. Most, if not all, of the evidence of its existence has been either a hoax or misidentification.
The origin of bigfoot is said to have been likely created from indigenous cultures combined with European folk tales. Tales of wild, hairy humanoids exist throughout the world with variations specific to their region, such as the Skunk ape of southeastern United States, the Yeti in Asia, and the Yowie of Australia. In that sense, it is a cryptid, or a creature that is believed to exist somewhere in the wild but its existence is disputed or unsubstantiated by science.
Other cryptids include but are not limited to the chupacabra, the Jersey Devil, and the Loch Ness Monster. Cryptids and the study of cryptids (cryptozoology) are not considered "real' science, but more of a pseudoscience because of the lack of evidence around the existence of cryptids. What is interesting is that different versions of certain cryptids exist in cultures and places that have or historically have had limited contact so the fact that the Yeti and Bigfoot exist in different parts of the world and are described to be basically the same thing is astounding.
As previously stated, cryptozoology is a pseudoscience, but that does not stop people from attempting real-world research; there is a bigfoot tracker that is available to the public in which sightings of bigfoot are characterized by date, location, and sighting details. The tracking data, available on the Bigfoot Field Researcher Organization's website, tells an interesting story- states with higher populations seem to have the most bigfoot sightings, with Washington, California, Florida, and Ohio having the largest volume of sightings. It should also be noted that all three states do have a fair amount of untouched nature away from population dense areas that remain untouched for other reasons (mostly predators that live in those areas, people tend to try to avoid places in which they may disappear). Coincidence? Maybe, but highly unlikely.
