As the holiday season approaches, festivities and joy fill the air, and welcoming families to come together to celebrate. However, amidst the excitement, it is crucial to prioritize safety and well-being to ensure memorable experiences by minimizing chances for random incidents. By adopting a proactive approach and implementing some practical measures, you can help create a secure environment for you and your loved ones during this special time.
First and foremost, maintaining home security is paramount. With the likelihood of travel and shopping activity at peak season, it is imperative to secure your home. Ensure that all doors and windows are locked before leaving and consider installing security systems or smart home devices for added protection. Timed lights and simulated occupancy can give the illusion that someone is home, deterring potential intruders. For example, you can alternate turning on and off different lamps or other light sources in different rooms, that you feel may have the heaviest amount of traffic passing through in your neighborhood.
If traveling during the holidays, take extra precautions to inform trustworthy neighbors or friends about your travel plans, and ask them to keep an eye on your house. Avoid broadcasting your absence on social media platforms, as this information can be exploited by individuals with malicious intent.
When it comes to shopping for gifts and groceries, exercise vigilance. Be aware of your surroundings in parking lots and shopping areas, and park in well-lit, populated areas. One routine I attempt to always maintain is to not look at my phone while walking to my car in a parking lot or a parking garage. Another one of my safety reminders is, "to stow it, don't show it". Keep personal belongings secure and out of sight inside of your vehicle and be cautious of pickpockets in crowded places. If possible, shop during daylight hours and utilize the buddy system, especially in unfamiliar areas.
Travel safety is essential, whether driving or flying. Ensure that your vehicle is well-maintained and equipped for winter conditions if applicable. Keep an ice scraper readily available for unexpected icy conditions, drinking water, a first aid kit, and extra blankets inside of your car, just in case of an emergency. Plan your travel agenda in advance and share your itinerary with someone you trust.
Lastly, emphasize open communication within your family or closest friends. Discuss safety and emergency plans with them to ensure that they are on the same page about what to do in case of unforeseen circumstances.
The holiday season is a time for joy, togetherness, and celebration. With clear and open communication, being vigilant, and by practicing risk prevention measures, you can help create and promote a safer and happier environment for yourself and for your family during the holiday season.
