Don't Do This on a First Date

First things first, avoid treating the date like a job interview. Sure, it's important to get to know each other, but bombarding your date with rapid-fire questions about their five-year plan or the intricacies of their childhood trauma is a fast track to awkward silence. Instead of grilling them about their resume, focus on enjoying the moment. Remember, you're not hiring a life partner; you're meeting someone new. Save the intense interrogations for the second date, or maybe even the third if you're feeling generous.

Another major faux pas is oversharing. There is a delicate balance between being open and unloading your entire life story, including that time you got lost in a supermarket at age three and it still haunts you. Your date doesn't need a minute-by-minute recap of your last breakup, divorce, or a detailed explanation of your obscure medical conditions. Keep the conversation light and fun. Think of it like a movie trailer: give them just enough to be intrigued, but don't spoil the whole plot.

Speaking of conversation, avoid dominating it. Sure, you're fascinating. Who wouldn't want to hear about your collection of vintage spoons or your theory on why pineapples belong on pizza? But remember, this is a dialogue, not a monologue. Ask questions, show interest, and listen. If you find yourself talking non-stop for 30 minutes straight, it might be time to pause and let your date get a word in. You might be missing out on some equally riveting stories about their pet hamster's escape artistry.

Finally, steer clear of your phone. Nothing screams "I'm not interested" quite like scrolling through social media while your date is talking. Unless you're both live-tweeting the date for some reason, keep your phone in your pocket or bag. If you absolutely must check it, excuse yourself to the restroom or wait until your date is briefly distracted by the dessert menu. Trust me, there's no Instagram post more important than making a real face-to-face connection with the person in front of you.
