Talk Lyrics to Me

Let me preface this by saying I love music. I sing in the shower, in my car, via karaoke, hum in grocery store aisles, and break into spontaneous chorus during awkward silences any place, anytime. So naturally, I thought what if I communicated only in song lyrics for an entire day? How hard could it be? Spoiler alert: kind of. But, also hilarious, even when I am the only one laughing.

The Rules Were Simple (Sort Of)

  1. I could only respond to people using existing song lyrics
  2. If I couldn't think of one quickly enough, I'd hum dramatically until I found one.
  3. No explaining what I was singing unless someone guessed. (Which only my best friends did.)

Morning: Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go The day started strong. I rolled out of bed, looked at myself in the mirror, and whispered, Hello is it me you're looking for? (Lionel Richie would've been proud.)

My partner asked how I slept. I responded: I had the time of my life. They blinked twice, smiled, and requested 30 more minutes of sleep. Mood set.

Midday: Working 9 to 5 But Barely

On a Zoom call, my coworkers asked if I had finished the report. I nervously sang, Under pressure pushing down on me and pretended to have audio issues.

Lunchtime? I dramatically stared at my sandwich and caroled, I want it that way. (It was a steak philly. It deserved the ballad.)

Afternoon: Call Me Maybe Or Don't

When my mom called, I hit her with: Hello from the other side. She paused. Are you okay? I nodded and whispered, I am a survivor, I'm not gon give up. (She told me to get some sleep, but inside your safe room because we are under tornado watch.)

I anxiously replied, the people bowed and prayed ... And, the sign flashed out its warning, in the words that it was forming.

Evening: Closing Time

By dinner, I had confused a barista, amused a neighbor, and mildly irritated a customer service rep. But, I also discovered just how deep my mental jukebox runs.

Final words of the day? I tucked myself into bed, looked at the ceiling and whispered, How many times I wondered ,it still comes out the same. no matter how you look at it or think of it, it's life and just got to play the game.

Conclusion: Would I Do It Again?

Would I do it again? Heck Yea! Sure, it confused a few people. Okay, most people. But, I'm down for the challenge anytime, any day. Life is more fun when it comes with a soundtrack. Stay tuned.
